About The Center

The New England Wildlife Center is a 25-year-old entrepreneurial venture based in South Weymouth, Massachusetts that provides medical care for ailing wildlife and uses it as a platform to hone environmental stewards, teach science and provide hands-on vocational training. The Center provides the only comprehensive response to the skyrocketing public demand for care for the state’s sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. We are on the frontline teaching life sciences and training future biotech professionals. Through the vision of Dr. Greg Mertz a new – and new kind of – facility is serving our community. The Center is the nation’s first and the State’s only demonstration “green” wildlife hospital and education center built to LEED (Leader in Energy and Efficiency Design) specifications.

We couple our education and environmental mission with an organizational philosophy that encourages civic engagement, through a warm and open environment that includes public access, office and meeting space for other community and nonprofit organizations, a community “wildlife folk and blues” open mike night held each Saturday, wildlife playgroup for preschoolers, a comprehensive volunteer program, wildlife lectures, veterinary care to organizations such as the Museum of Science, and more.

Our veterinary and education staff work with other state and private organizations around the state on emerging issues which now include participation in the State of Massachusetts Animal Response Team (SMART) and the Massachusetts Oil Spill Prevention and Response Act Advisory Committee, the Boston Youth Environmental Network and many others. The Center was created by a handful of Massachusetts’ citizens, and through private donations raises operating funds in-house with a development department of two, this include raising just under $8 million to build our new “green” facility.
